I was in the 60th. Army Band at Ft Polk in 1968-69. I may be wrong, but I think we were the THIRD Army in those days ??? Went to the 298th in Berlin in '69. Anyone else at Polk in those days?

This is for Larry Powell from AB.Com: said:   June 14, 2010 9:53 pm PST
I found some interesting facts about The USARPAC Band! In 1966 and again in 1968, the 21st Infantry went to Vietnam, where they served with the 196th Infantry Brigade (Light), respectfully. On 15 February 1969, both battalions became part of the 23rd Infantry Division (AMERICAL). 21st Infantry was relieved on 1 November 1971 from assignment to the 23rd Infantry Division and reassigned to the 196th Infantry Brigade (Light). On 11 August 1972, with the deescalation of the Vietnam War, The unit was relieved on 16 January 1986 from assignment to the 196th Infantry Brigade (Light), assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, and activated at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. It was inactivated on 15 July 1995 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and relieved from assignment The 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry was reactivated at Fort Lewis, WA, on 16 March 2002 and was concurrently assigned to the 25th Infantry Division. The unit deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, The unit was redesignated on 1 October 2005 as the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment. It was inactivated on 1 June 2006 at Fort Lewis, Washington, and relieved from assignment to the 25th Infantry Division. It was assigned on 16 December 2006 to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, and activated at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. My question is, when you served with USARPAC, what was the band called? The 196th Infantry Brigade Band stationed out of where? (or were they in Viet Nam), or The 25th ID Band out of Sconfeld Barracks in Hawaii, or 98th Infantry Division Band out oif where? Or was the band part of the 23rd Inf. Div. AMERICAL Band? I'm not sure which is the correct info for the USARPAC Band & would apreciate your help in helpimg me get it right!

I served in the US Navy for 4 years. I was in unit band 146 out of Naval Air Station in Norfolk, VA and then moved to the Cinclant band, also in Norfolk. I served in The US Army band program for 16 years and served in the 392nd Army band from 1969-1972, the USARPAC Hawaii, band from 1972-74, the 19th army band from 1974-78, the 25th division band Hawaii from 1978-81 and finished out my army career with the 19th army band from 1982-85.

Hi everyone! It's nice to see John Stewart's name here - I remember you from our Presidio days. How have you been?

John C Stewart said:   May 26, 2010 4:45 pm PST
I second the motion John. Tony High and Sherry High were two of the nicest people I ever met, and both military musicians with the 8th ID Band Bad Kreuznach, Germany. Tony was always easy going, always cool, and did I mention a fine Trombone Player? How many Beer Tents and parades did we march and play in together? I hope to see you again someday Tony. Stew

My sympathies go out to the family of Tony High, 8th ID Band trombone player, 1976 - 1978. At 53 yrs., Tony left us way too early! Tony was a great friend & will be missed by all who knew him.

To see the 113th US Army Band, under the leadership of CWO Dennis Stone perform in Bill Murray's 1981 movie "Stripes", go to Crackle.Com & enter "Stripes" in the search field. If you advance the movie to the 1hr10min mark, you can recognize several army band members in their 4 minute performance!

I enlisted while attending Northridge College in 1967. Got tired of school and decided to enlist. Actually the best thing I ever did. Years later played with great latin bands who played at the Dancing Waters in San Pedro. Sorry that FT Mac is closed, as it was a beautiful base. Went on to play with some really great guitar players you may want to google; such as Lee Ritenour, Mitch Holder and Bob Gallarza. Please google them and check them out. Also recorded and played with the Major's Band in the Naval School of Music in Little Creek VA in 1968.

I am trying to find the last known address (or email) for Floyd Skillern (string bass) who served in the 97th Army Band at Ft. Sill, OK in the 50's. He left the service and traveled with Peggy Lee and then reinlisted. He may have been a member of your band at one time or another. Let me know. Thanks!! Dwight

Like to thank Dwight Beckham, trumpet player from Ft. Sill's 97th Army Band, for helping re-connect some of his old bandsman. Dwight publishes the 97th's newsletter. Right on Dwight!

Hi, I was with the 521st AF Band, 'The Air Force Band of the Great Plains' from Sept. 1950 to Nov. 1953. Our base was Francis E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, Wyoming. My MOS was 439-saxophone. If any of my old buddies are still around, I would love to hear from them!

I just found your site. Glad to see it. Quite an undertaking. I am publishing a 97th Army Band Newsletter which has dealt primarily with the years 1950 to 1956. I have names of many of its members during that period and contact information for approx. 18 members.

It's only $15.00 a year and we do what miliary musicians do when we get together. Last year was in Oklahoma City, this year in Huntsville, AL.

I have set up a group site on FB (which is where EVERYBODY is, you know!) and invite all you folks here to join us there too. Hope we can populate this site with many more alumni!

Folks - You've missed the 5th Infantry Division (M) Band at Ft. Polk. I was there when Ft. Polk was experimenting with being a "light infantry division" from 1978-1980. The division actually had vehicles that looked like armored dune buggies. Very strange. Regards, Mark Kovach

Hey John Reed... I was a flute player when you were there the second time... between 1975-1978.
