I thought I'd seen it all in the US 8th ID Band in BK, Germany, 76-78. And It will always be my #1 favorite of my military memories. Those concerts and parades throughout Germany, France, Switzerland, Holland, and especially those Beer and Wine fests in Germany were legendary! It was Right after the Vietnam war ended and it was party time! But the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge walk US 6th Army Band in 86-89, across the Golden Gate Bridge was a fantastic once in a lifetime event too! Not to mention the filming of "The Presidio" with "Sean Connery"parked out in front of the Band hall. But still, it was not like BK, Germany in the "Disco late 70's"!!! Those were the Days! Stew

This is a MUST SEE link! Right after I got my European Out in Germany, my 2 brothers came to Europe on tour with the late & great Johnny 'Guitar' Watson. Their sax player couldn't make the tour & they needed a saxophonist urgently. I woke up SP5 sax player Jon Hassan, from the 8th ID band at 2 AM & asked if he wanted to join the tour. Didn't take much convincing & after he got CWO Brian Arnold's approval, we met up with the band in Berlin & had a 3 week long blast playing Europe. This link was recorded in 1980 in Paris for French TV. On trumpet, Walt Fowler from the original Frank Zappa Band http://youtu.be/JIsR6s4bmLw

OK! here is one for the "Books". Remember the command PASS IN Review?....Ft.Leonard Wood,MO circa '60s Gammon Field end of the month parade review,Feb dead of winter, parade uniform, class A,longJohns, gloves...no overcoats. Standing at parade-rest waiting for the Reviewing Stand to fill with Reviewing Officer and guests. Now the drama begins. Waiting for the hand signal to sound ATTN! signal: right arm raised with palms facing out...NO GO! signal:right arm with palms facing down across the throat moving from left to right.....Weather,dismal,cloudy.What was the signal given? BandMaster,Sound ATTN & ADJ CALL! The Parade begins.......off in the distance you can barely see a person running towards the end of the formation then stops and returns to the reviewing stand. The troops have paraded pass the reviewing stand and now the Band is facing the reviewing stand for the step-OFF with Army Song, as the Band does it's left turn an Officer signals the BandMaster to the side I could see from the right corner of my eye the BandMaster at attention with the officer in his face with mouth moving very quickly with force and eyes wide open!!!! Now we know what signal was given.

Stan, I've completed my research on the U.S. Army Bands that were stationed in France. The bands you mentioned were actually active in France until May 1967, when U.S. and all other foreign military forces were expelled from France. Maybe we'll get some veteran musicians that were stationed in one of the three bands to 'sign up'!

ARMY BANDS IN FRANCE: Recently heard from a former Engineer officer stationed in France in the early to mid 1950s. He remembers these 3 Army Bands in France during that time: 76th, 118th (Verdun I think), and 279th (an all colored band until around 1952 he thinks). Would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has more information on those bands, their locations, and personnel.

Hello fellow military musicians!! Great to see such a great website!! I was stationed at 5th Army Fort Sam Houston from early 90 to early 95. I would never give up the time I spent in the Army Band or the great friends I have made and kept over the years!! You are all amazing people!! I also have to tip my hat to the monster called Facebook for bringing so many of us back together after all these years. I hope everyone is safe and doing well and look forward to keeping up with everyone through this site and facebook. Anyone out there know where Jason Cady (party maniac from the School of Music late 89) or Scott Mcclure (trombone monster from Fort Sam 94-95? He was still stationed there when I left in 95) shoot me an email.

I was a percussionist and drum major of the 30th Army band in Munich, 1955-56. I see that the band was either deactivated or sent somewhere else in 1967. Munich was great, as anyone stationed there knows. Also leave time was special with trips to France, Austria, and Italy. Before Munich, I was a member of one of the two bands at Fort Gordon, Georgia. I forget the number designation of that band. The best that happened was when I was transferrred to Germany. Being a Georgian I already knew Georgia, but Germany and Europe was truly a great experience. Anybody know what happened to the 30th Army band after 1967?

Here's a piece of US Army band trivia for you. The Indianapolis Colts football team has a kicker by the name of Alex Vinatiere. Alex's great-grandfather was Felix Vinatiere. Felix was the US Army bandleader for the 7th U.S. Cavalry, under GEN George Armstrong Custer. The band was not at the Little Big Horn. I have a CD of the original music of Felix Vinatiere, entitled, "Custer's Last Band."

Great to see a military musician site, again. I miss "Ted's Military Band" site. When I was getting drafted in 1968 the old "A.G" Bands didn't have oboe slots, so they gave me an OJT MOS of clarinet so I played oboe in concert and bass drum on the march. Really thrilled Mr. Farraro(?) who had transferred down from 6th ARMY Band. CWO Carlton R. Morris is still active in bands out of Texas. Thanks for the tip, John Stewart!

Thanks, John. Please visit the BAA website if you get a chance. Tom Day has put together something very special for military honor guards, and we are not trying to sell anything - except honor and respect. Too many Veterans are given their final honor with a cassette tape, CD, or a "bugle-shaped object" (BSO) that looks like a bugle, but plays an electronic sound chip. There are over 5000 BAA member buglers nationwide, and we are all deeply honored to sound Taps on request. I was both honored and most fortunate to have been able to sound Taps for my dad about 6 years ago. You are providing a great service to all military musicians. We have been called many things over the years. In Vietnam we were lumped in with the "clerks and jerks". But, as you well know, we are a very special brotherhood of Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen (and, of course, women). Keep up the good work. Tom

In 1959, Col. Barney founded the NORAD band. The band was composed of musicians representing the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force. It was the only international, interservice band in existence. Initially appearing before small audiences, the band later appeared on such shows as NBC's Steve Allen Show in May 1960.

I don't know Jim Tayler. Some of the people I know may know them. I currently play in the Pomona Concert Band, The Claremont Winds, and The Golden State British Brass Band. I also know a couple of guys in "Bones West" When I was at Ft. Mac. my wife and I lived in an apartment at 770 30th Street. The French horn players I remember from Ft. MacArthur are SFC George Hudson, SP/4 John C. Johnston and PFC Marty Ryan. Marty's ex-wife is the recently retired Poet Laureate of the United States. John was in the band at Cal State LA, and was drum major for the CSLA marching band. George was a fun guy and good horn player, but a little pompous. Where was the 8th ID band located? Are you related to Alan Moody from San Diego? I stay in touch with 7 guys from Ft. Mac. I copied them on my e-mail to you. I don't remember any horn players from the 1st CAV or Ft. Hood. 1966-69 was along time ago.

Hello! I might be able to shed a little light on the subject about the 81st at Ft. Campbell, KY. We were sent there as a unit once the conflict was settled in the Dominican Republic. That was in Sept. of 1966. I was discharged in January of 1967 but returned there on my way back east from a ski trip in Colorado in December of 1969. My old C.O. was gone (Roy Rohrbaugh, W-3 then) but a few of the old guys were still around. I was told that in the very near future they were reassigned to some fort in Illinois (the name escapes me). It was at THAT post that the band was decomissioned. Roy Rohrbaugh retired and moved back to his home town of York, PA. I don't know if he would be responsive to your questions but it might be worth a try. I hope this helps.

I found some interesting facts about The USARPAC Band! In 1966 and again in 1968, the 21st Infantry went to Vietnam, where they served with the 196th Infantry Brigade (Light), respectfully. On 15 February 1969, both battalions became part of the 23rd Infantry Division (AMERICAL). 21st Infantry was relieved on 1 November 1971 from assignment to the 23rd Infantry Division and reassigned to the 196th Infantry Brigade (Light). On 11 August 1972, with the deescalation of the Vietnam War, The unit was relieved on 16 January 1986 from assignment to the 196th Infantry Brigade (Light), assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, and activated at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. It was inactivated on 15 July 1995 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and relieved from assignment The 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry was reactivated at Fort Lewis, WA, on 16 March 2002 and was concurrently assigned to the 25th Infantry Division. The unit deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, The unit was redesignated on 1 October 2005 as the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment. It was inactivated on 1 June 2006 at Fort Lewis, Washington, and relieved from assignment to the 25th Infantry Division. It was assigned on 16 December 2006 to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, and activated at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. My question is, when you served with USARPAC, what was the band called? The 196th Infantry Brigade Band stationed out of where? (or were they in Viet Nam), or The 25th ID Band out of Sconfeld Barracks in Hawaii, or 98th Infantry Division Band out oif where? Or was the band part of the 23rd Inf. Div. AMERICAL Band? I'm not sure which is the correct info for the USARPAC Band & would apreciate your help in helpimg me get it right!

Went on to play with some really great guitar players you may want to google; such as Lee Ritenour, Mitch Holder and Bob Gallarza. Please google them and check them out. Folks - You've missed the 5th Infantry Division (M) Band at Ft. Polk. I was there when Ft. Polk was experimenting with being a "light infantry division" from 1978-1980. The division actually had vehicles that looked like armored dune buggies. Very strange. Regards, Mark Kovach

Hey John Reed... I was a flute player when you were there the second time... between 1975-1978.

My name is Bruce Cullings. I was a member of the 8th Infantry Division Band in Goeppingen and Bad Kreuznach Germany in 1957-58 as a drummer and company clerk under CWO Kenneth Jeffry, now deceased. Any interested members or even nonmembers of the Band are encouraged to contact me regarding this year's and future group reunions.

In 69 the band was the 4th Army HQ band. There was a change in HQ and we bacame the 5th Army HQ band. Played graduations for BAMC, marched weekend parades all over Texas. I see that the band is now a Medical Corps band

I had 3 assignments at the 74th ending in my retirement 12/88. I am trying to find as many alumni as I can to eventually have a reunion weekend sometime in the future in Indianapolis. Let me know when you were there and some names to track down.

Thanks to whoever got this up and running. I've been making some contacts with my old Army Band buddies and hope to find more! Still playing after all these years! I play Bass Trombone in several big bands in the Dallas Ft Worth area and went on to play professionally in a rock band called "Hired Help" in Germany and a variety Club Band called "Brave Men" in Florida.
